Grow Leek 'Bulgarian Giant', an autumn variety originating from Bulgaria and popular in Europe. It produces long, thin leeks with quality light-green leaves and has a growing period of approximately 6–9 months.

The leeks store well in the ground during the cooler months, making this a useful variety for extended harvesting.

How to Grow

Soil

Leeks can tolerate most soil types but require free-draining soil. Avoid over-fertilising before planting, as this can make the plants more susceptible to frost damage. Mixing compost into the soil is sufficient.

Position

Leeks are shade tolerant, making them suitable for less-than-ideal or partially shaded areas of the veggie patch.

How to Plant

Propagate the seeds in trays and transplant approximately one month after germination.

Alternatively, sow directly into the veggie patch when temperatures are above 7°C, as frost can cause the plants to become stunted.
