Smooth Roots with Purple Tops and Crisp White Flesh
Little Veggie Patch Co Purple Top Turnip produces smooth, round roots with vibrant purple skin above the soil and crisp white flesh below. The roots grow to an average diameter of 7–10cm, adding both colour and flavour to the veggie patch.
The large, lobed greens are also edible and can be cooked like other leafy green vegetables, giving you two useful harvests from the one plant.

How to Grow
Soil
Prepare the soil in a similar manner to that of growing carrots. They prefer a deep, friable soil type that is not overly rich with nitrogen. Will require high levels of potassium so applying potash and mulching with lucerne hay is recommended.
Position
Plant in full sun, although turnips can tolerate some shade. This makes them suitable for a lower-light or “B grade” area of the veggie patch. They can also be planted where leafy greens were growing the previous season.
How to Plant
Soak the seeds in water overnight before planting. Sow directly into the garden patch. Germination can be slow, so allow nearly a month for the first growth to appear.
Perfect For
- Growing colourful heirloom turnips
- Harvesting both roots and edible greens
- Home veggie patches with full sun or some shade
- Gardeners looking for a versatile root vegetable
