Join the Plastic-Free July Movement: Tips and Ideas for a Sustainable Lifestyle

It's Plastic Free July, which aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it.

Joining the challenge is quite simple...choose to refuse single-use plastic during July.  There will be over a million+ people worldwide from 130 countries all making a difference to the world.

We at Pookipoiga are pretty passionate about our planet and one of our major ideals is to cut down on plastics, both in store and at home. So we had a bit of pow-wow and made some notes on some of our practices in store and at home.

Megan loves her beeswax wraps, which not only look and smell fabulous but last for a year and when you're done with them, straight in the compost for decomposition! They also keep your cut bread, avocados and other vegetables fresh for longer. It is incredible to reduce food waste and great for packing lunches. "Cheese, anyone?"

Sree love love loves the Paperwallets! Ask him to show you his wallet and he's happy to run around and find it so that he can charm you with its amazing skills. He'll tell you all about its water resistance, tear resistance (you can't rip that shit up if you try - but please don't try) and long life expectancy. "I've had mine for a couple of years and it's still in great condition - no tears, no scratches". He does lament the day when he needs a new one, but considering its current condition, it will be many years down the track. At the end of its lifespan, it is recyclable. Life doesn't get any better!

Kendall is all about the tote bags. They fold up small, are easy to pack away and are always good to have on hand. "We generally keep a load in the car and it's taken us a few attempts to remember to take them in but once you get into the routine, it's great! We also use them for our horses, as back before the shops had green bags, everyone would either have to use plastic bags or buckets (which were a decent alternative) to put the horse feed in then throw them out after one or two uses. We've had our current tote bags for over two years now and they are fantastic as we save over 1200 bags a year from landfill!"

And fashion wise there are so many stylish totes about that work with so many charities that they are perfect for handbags as well :) Able and Game do some pretty snazzy tote bags - Cat Petting Championship, here I come!
