It Started with Lavender
Thurlby’s story began in 1976, when Penny and Kim Jewell moved to Walpole in the Southern Forests of Western Australia and planted their first lavender bushes. What started with handcrafted soaps and herbal products made in the family kitchen grew into Thurlby Herb Farm, built around a love of botanical traditions, natural ingredients and making things thoughtfully.
Made by Hand on the Farm
More than 50 years later, Thurlby is still making its products in North Walpole, Western Australia. From soaps and skincare to herbal blends, wardrobe blocks and gifts, products are made in small batches by a local team, with formulations free from parabens and lauryl sulphates.
Thurlby also looks for ways to reduce unnecessary plastic, using materials such as recycled cotton paper, reusable tins and glass jars across its range. Many of the herbs and botanicals that inspired those early creations continue to influence what Thurlby makes today.
A Proud Australian Tradition
In 2018, Sarah and Phil Butlin took over Thurlby Herb Farm, building on the foundations laid by the Jewell family while continuing to grow the range and invest in the farm and workshops.
We were also lucky to visit the farm in 2019 before COVID. This is possibly one of the only cottage like industries still going on in Australia. Wallpaper is very scenic and not too far off the avocado capital of Pemberton
